Johann Jacob Schweppe (1740-1821), German, developed a method for carbonating water in the Swiss city of Geneva, founding the Schweppes Company in that city in 1783.
In 1792 he moved to London to develop the business until retiring in 1798, leaving the way open to future expansion, under the name of J. Schweppe & Co. Around 1870 appeared Tonic, business This drink was direct and original heir to those Englishmen who went to India for the greater glory of the British Empire. These took quinine for malaria and other fevers, and got used to mix, to mitigate its bitter flavor, with lemon and soda. The result, alone or mixed with gin, ended up having so much success, that led him back to England and became the national drink. He was born gin and tonic, a long drink, lively and light, perfect for the same company for after-dinner aperitif or night. In 1783 Jacob Schweppe created the first industrial process to produce "artificial" carbonated soda predecessor and lays the foundation stone of modern industry of soft drinks bottled water. • King William IV of England is sponsoring the drink, and that's how Schweppes start using the famous title "by appointment of" ("by the grace of His Majesty"). Schweppes Mineral-Waters (1883) In 1835 appeared the first carbonated lemon soda in the world under the Schweppes brand and had to wait almost 100 years for Schweppes orange. • Schweppes launches bid and win the contract to supply refreshments officially the first international fair, the Great Universal Exhibition of 1851. • Around 1870 appeared Tonic. • The tone was inherited from the British soldiers who traveled to India in the British Empire, who fought malaria and other fevers taking soda mixed with lemon and quinine. • Walter James Hawksford, Kingston, Surrey, traveling to New York aboard the Titanic to become the first chief export Schweppes. Arrives safely. In 2012, the original bottle of Schweppes, which sank with the ship, was found in perfect condition. Schweppes began selling its products in Spain in 1957. • LED Schweppes Gran Vía of Madrid was placed in 1969. • Schweppes Tonic became a popular drink, thanks to their advertising campaigns. The campaign "The Man in the tonic", with twelve years of TV appearances and about 50 spots, led Spain to lead the per capita consumption trend worldwide.
