The first Seagram distillery was founded in 1857 in Waterloo, Ontario, where it came from its founder, Joseph E. Seagram.
The company was later acquired by Samuel Bronfman, who founded Distillers Corporation Limited and maintain Seagram until late 1920. In 1928 Distillers Corporation was acquired by Joseph E. Seagram & Sons but was maintained by Bronfman. With the death of Samuel Bronfman in 1971, Edgar M. Bronfman became the owner of the company.
