Beer Producer Gulden Draak, located in the region of East Flanders (Belgium)
The history of the brewery dates back to 1784, where in Ertvelde, a Jean Baptiste De Bruin founded "From Peer", makes the beer brewing activity leading and sells beer in question. In 1919 he changed the name of the brewery "Brasserie Bios", referring to the launch of the beer of the same name. With his past biologist, he had real knowledge of science. It has launched several successful beer as Bios Vlaamse Bourgogne (oud bruin) and Leutebock (lager). He then expanded the brewery to increase production and move to glass bottles. His talent as a businessman than his passion for brewing, he decided to combine a cooperative when many breweries get into trouble because of the war and was able to save and share with other brewers. But his wife Margriet, dealing primarily the education of their son Jozef Van Steenberge born in 1914, could not accept because it was the symbol of what his father had left. After the death of his father in 1962, Jozef Van Steenberge takes over. It directs the brewery back to the production of high quality beer fermentation. Clean malt and hops production created by Jozef Schelfaut disappear and are replaced by a policy of purchasing raw materials based on specifications uncompromising quality loads. It was not until reaching the age of 64 years Jozef Van Steenberge begins to occupy only the brewery, and after a political career as mayor and senator, like his father. That at this time the brewery begins to brew special beers of high fermentation with a second fermentation. It was also at this time, in 1978, the brewery acquired the recipe for beer brewed by the Augustinian Fathers in their monastery in Ghent. It is then developed in Ertvelde and in 1982, the beer "Augustijn" is placed on the market. Immediately the thundering success and to this day, it remains the flagship of the brewery. Other top-fermented beers Gulden Draak Piraat and complement the range already so rich. Which turns out to be a stroke of genius several years later. In the early 80s, the market for specialty beers with a high alcohol percentage was fairly limited. Since 2000, we clearly distinguish a trend in the beer industry worldwide: the demand for lager beer year after year is reduced in favor of beer tasting rich and complex taste. Jozef Van Steenberge had planned it in one way or another. With the focus on these beers, the brewery was able to survive and grow, and is ready for future generations taking over .. In 1990, management of the brewery passes Paul Van Steenberge, son of Jozef. It invests heavily to modernize and computerize its brewery. The expected saturation of the domestic market has greatly stimulated prospecting to find new markets abroad. In 1998, Jef Versele, nephew of Paul Van Steenberge - 7th generation - just lend a hand to the family of brewers. Through his efforts, the export of the attractive range of high fermentation beers increased 60%. Especially to countries like the United States, the Netherlands and Italy. To achieve the ambitious plans of the brewery, the Augustijn range was expanded in 2009 by the Augustijn Brune. The launch of this new beer was the perfect time to restyle and bring up to date Augustijn Blonde and Augustijn Grand Cru.
